It is estimated that 70% of thieves enter a home through the front, back, or garage doors, during the day, when they believe no one will be home. Add windows to the equation and the estimate rises to 90%. While you should always lock all doors, windows, and cars, it is important to assess your vulnerability according to the many factors.
In general, thieves want to take the path of least resistance. As a result, you want to do all you can to deter thieves. You need not live in a fortress. In fact, you cannot create a fortress. If your home is well protected with layers of security, and you exercise common sense, you have a lower probablility than others of being victimized.
Home secuirty is like the experience of the two hikers in the woods. Upon encountering a bear, they both turn around and take off running down the trail. Then one suddenly stops to put on his running shoes. The other hiker says,
“what are you doing? You can’t outrun a bear.”
The hiker putting on his running shoes replies,
“I don’t have to. I only have to outrun you.”
